Dear Sir,
Terrific piece of journalism by Hutchins student Lachlan Rogers in Saturday’s Mercury on the subject of social media. An aspect of the www that is becoming increasingly apparent is the profiling of net users by mining data provided by tweets, likes, searches, links, etc. These algorithms seem to know us better than our family or friends do, and we are being provided with a stream of information tailored precisely to our taste. I have noticed that people seem to be becoming much more definite in their views, even on subjects that leave a lot of room for conjecture, and I wonder if this is because they are being fed only news and opinions that confirm their point of view. I like to seek out opinions that oppose my own - always a good idea - and this seems to disrupt my profile and attracts a more interesting spread of information. I think that opinions are becoming increasingly polarised along with the demise of the “open mind” because of this profiling using "data mining” .
